A person close to the situation says residents of a privately-owned personal care home in the metro region are facing double digit rent increases—and they don’t have much time to come up with the difference.
Dawn Furey, who has a family member in the home, which is located in Paradise, says her next month’s rent is going up by over $400—a 14 per cent hike. She was given 30 days notice.
The provincial government recently gave private nursing facilities an increase for government-sponsored beds, but Furey says her family member is not in such a room.
She says if they have a pension or have personal savings, they don’t qualify for the subsidized beds. Furey says they have 30 days to come up with the money, or find a new place to live if they can afford it.
