The NDP member for Torngat Mountains yesterday presented a petition in the House of Assembly looking for help for residents struggling with the cost of heating their homes.
Winter is descending in Labrador and the current provincial oil to electric incentive program effectively excludes all six communities on Labrador’s north coast because their electricity is generated by diesel generators.
That, says Lela Evans, leaves many in the area having to shoulder high home heating costs.
She says residents of the north coast are “desperate to find a reliable home heating source” with the disproportionately high cost of fuel in the region and the equally high cost of electricity.
