The amounts of bonuses paid to executives and C-Core and the Genesis Centre—both entities of Memorial University—were redacted by the provincial government out of fear of legal liability. However, the person who did the deep financial dive into MUN’s spending activities believes she has the legal authority to go through their books.

Among other things, Denise Hanrahan’s audit found lavish spending and lack of controls and policies at many levels.

C-Core and the Genesis Centre sent a “cease and desist” letter if the findings on extra compensation for executives were made public, so Justice Minister John Hogan decided not to risk legal action and blacked out the information.

Hanrahan maintains that those two entities are included in her mandate.

Hanrahan says because the two entities are included in Memorial University’s financial statement, which is consolidated into Public Accounts, that they are within her domain.
