A recent inspection on the bridge on Terminal Service Road – also known as the CNR Bridge -in Port aux Basques, has resulted in the closure of the bridge to all vehicle traffic starting on November 1st.
The Department of Transportation and Works says the bridge will be open to one lane of traffic between 7:00 a.m. and midnight from now until next Wednesday for vehicles under 10 tonnes. That will allow Marine Atlantic to put plans in place to address employee and foot traffic within their secure area.
The condition of the bridge is deteriorating. Two years ago the maximum load limit on the span was reduced to ten tonnes.
The department is working with the town of Port aux Basques and Marine Atlantic on replacement of the bridge.
