Marina, a mother of three, left the conflict in Ukraine earlier this year for the safety of Newfoundland and Labrador as the war rages on in that country – but now she’s considering moving back due to problems finding an affordable place to stay.
After months in a hotel, she found a reasonably-priced basement apartment. But in an unexpected turn of events, she won’t be able to stay put for the long term. As a result, Marina has decided to return to Ukraine instead of continuing to struggle in St. John’s.
Prior to her arrival in Canada, she worked in Ukraine as a dentist, then a psychologist. She has been working in a daycare setting in St. John’s.
The apartment she rents is in a house which is in transition, so she has until the end of December to move out, but she cannot afford any of the alternatives which she has seen. Affordability and longing for family are the two main reasons for her decision to return to her homeland, but it is difficult for her children as they are just beginning to adapt to their new surroundings.
They loved Halloween here and are looking forward to celebrating Christmas.
They will uproot early in the new year.
