We all know 709—now get used to 879.
For the first time ever, Newfoundland and Labrador will have two area codes starting early in the new year.
Expect to start seeing the new 879 area code applied to new phone numbers any time after February 17.
The old 709 area code will be kept on existing numbers, and will still be applied to new numbers until that supply is exhausted.
The new area code will be applied anywhere in the province, and is not limited to any specific geographic area—the same as 709. The new area code will not affect the way local or long-distance calls are dialed.
