The bathrooms in Bannerman Park in St. John’s are closed until further notice.
The city cites increased incidence of vandalism and misuse which has resulted in damage to the plumbing and hardware.
St. John’s has reached out to the provincial government to request port-a-potties be placed on the grounds of Colonial Building. That’s where the tent city encampment is located.
Council acknowledges the importance of bathroom facilities in the park, but says they have become inaccessible because of current conditions which pose a health and safety issue for residents and staff.
Mayor Danny Breen says some of the examples include needles and garbage being flushed and clogging the toilets, human waste on the floor, toilets being dislodged and soap dispensers being removed or damage.
Mayor Breen will address the issue at City Hall this afternoon at 1:00. VOCM News will be there.
