The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is reminding residents to keep their homes secure over the holiday season, especially if they are leaving for extended periods of time.
Constable James Cadigan says in recent months the RNC has seen an uptick in home break and entries, specifically in the St. John’s-metro region.
He says it is important to make sure your property is secured even if you are staying home. He is urging residents to keep their windows and doors locked at all times.
Some other tips include using curtains and blinds to keep all gifts and valuable items out of sight, ensuring your home is well-lit inside and outside, if you are away consider using timers or motion activated lighting to make it seem as though your are home, using any available alarm systems, consider keeping a radio on if you are away, and ask a friend or neighbours to check on your property.
Cadigan says it’s also good to secure loose items around the outside of your property, like ladders or garbage bins, so they can’t be used to gain access to upper levels of your home. Residents may want to trim trees or shrubs to eliminate hiding spots for anyone who may be trespassing on their property.
He says to check in with your neighbours, and report any suspicious activity to police.
