MusicNL is calling on the federal government to come through on promises to increase funding for the Canada Music Fund.
The Liberals vowed to double their funding for the program to $50 million annually, but MusicNL CEO Rhonda Tulk Lane says that’s yet to happen.
She says the grants are especially important to many local artists in this province, who use the money to further their career.
Tulk Lane says the local music scene has taken off since the pandemic, and they’re worried there isn’t enough funding to support continued growth.
The worry, she says, is that they will not see the growth of local musicians, who ultimately play a huge roll in the economy. She fears it will hurt new artists the most as they won’t get the same opportunities to export their music beyond the province.
Industry members from across Canada are now teaming up for an online campaign and calling on Liberal MPs to lobby for the funding boost in this year’s federal budget.
