Heritage Memorials has been selected as the sub-contractor to complete the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Downtown St. John’s—but the cost has soared.
The future of the project, which is part of the refurbishment of the War Memorial, was brought into question in November after the company initially awarded the contract, Ocean Floor Granite, had their deal terminated.
The provincial government says they worked with the general contractor, Can-Am, to select the new supplier, which is Nova Scotia-based but has offices in Mount Pearl.
The cost of the project, however, has more than doubled to $236,830, from the initial contract of $105,000.
The province has doubled down that the project will be completed by July 1, and the company says they have a quick turnaround time.
President Steven Nelson says they are starting the work this week, and will have their part completed in early March so that it can be shipped to Newfoundland.
He says they have put aside all of their other projects so they can “assign the whole plant” to constructing the Tomb.
