The owners of the Masonic Temple in St. John’s are forging ahead with renovations to the historic building, applying to St. John’s City Council for the construction of an elevator and extension.
Co-owner Morgan MacRae says the application to have an elevator in the building has been approved, and they’re also hoping to build an atrium on the southeast side of the building, overlooking St. John’s Harbour.
The extension will “bump out” the area once known as the Screech Room in the bar area. The idea is to offer a variety of experiences there including a tea room and a place to host wedding receptions.
MacRae says it’s a costly and labour-intensive venture and they still don’t have any firm timelines on when the building will be open to the public.
