Career criminal Philip Pynn was back in court this morning to change how he wants to be tried on the latest charges against him.
Pynn, now 38, was charged last April with three counts of drug trafficking, but it was far from a routine bust and seizure.
It’s alleged he was found with about $30,000 worth of drugs on and in him, following a body cavity search by guards at HMP last January.
The multiple packages of drugs included the dangerous opioid fentanyl, Xanax—used to treat anxiety and panic disorders—and cocaine.
It took about two months to test and confirm what they were, followed by the charges being laid against Pynn.
He had elected to be tried in Supreme Court with a preliminary inquiry set to start this morning.
But defence lawyer Mark Gruchy told Judge Jacqueline Brazil that new information had caused them to change their mind—and re-elect to be tried by provincial court judge instead.
Pynn has dozens of criminal charges and convictions to his name, but is best known for the manslaughter conviction in the shooting death of his friend Nick Winsor, during a botched robbery in 2011.
Pynn is now free on conditions pending his next court date on the drug charges on February 26.
