The province’s pharmacists’ association says new legislation allowing for the export of drugs to the United States is a concern, but they’re not going into panic mode just yet.
Association President Dr. Ashley Waghmare says drug shortages are something they’ve been concerned about for years, and the recent news does not alleviate those worries. Despite that, she doesn’t expect there will be any major threats out of the gate.
She doesn’t expect there to be any immediate supply issues that should cause panic among patients, but says Canada cannot simply supply drugs to others when there are already issues in supplying some drugs to Canadian patients.
Drugs that will be exported to the states from this country include treatments for asthma, mental illness, and diabetes. Waghmare says that raises concerns about the supply of Ozempic—a drug used to treat diabetes and aid in weight loss, which is already in short supply.
