After spending decades fixing clocks for a living in her homeland, a Ukrainian woman’s handiwork is in high demand in this province.
Liudmyla Pass moved to Chapel’s Cove in late-November and has been busy ever since fixing up broken clocks and watches—most notably repairing the Carbonear clock tower, which hadn’t been functional in decades.
Speaking on her mother’s behalf, Yulia Veretennyk says her mom has always been fascinated with clocks and watches, a passion which has helped in her adjustment to the province.
Veretennyk says her mom misses working at the job she used to work at every day back in the Ukraine, but she’s happy that there is a need for clock repair in this province as she now has lots of projects to keep busy with.
Her mom hasn’t started a formal business yet, but they’ve been receiving inquiries from all over the province and have even had to travel to work on some jobs.
She says many of the clocks in need of repair are large grandfather clocks that cannot be transported easily, so they’ll travel to people’s homes to help them get their clock back up and running.
