Ottawa has awarded a $34-million contract to Newdock for the conversion and refit of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Judy LaMarsh.
The federal government says work on the vessel began last month and is expected to continue until March 2025. The work is expected to create 80 new jobs.
The refit will include an overhaul of the ship’s propulsion, communication, and navigation systems. As well, work will be completed on crew accommodation and work spaces, and a new buoy crane will be installed.
Judy LaMarsh primarily operates in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway, performing icebreaking operations and tending to navigational buoys.
Wayne Ash, General Manager of Newdock, says their company won’t be the only one benefitting from the work, noting potential spinoff in terms of outside contractors and supplies needed to be purchased.
He doesn’t want to put a dollar figure on it, but says it will be “significant.”
