St. John’s city council has rubber-stamped another six antennas for a communications tower in Airport Heights.
Not that they had any say in the matter.
Such telecommunications towers and related applications fall under federal jurisdiction.
The city’s role amounts to little more than notifying the public, much to the frustration of some councilors.
That latest approval was delayed two weeks when concerned residents in the Autumn Drive area had to request more information.
Councillor Ron Ellsworth called out Big Telecom for not being proactive enough. “I’m speaking to the consultants, to Bell, Rogers, Telus, Eastlink, all these guys who are doing the antennas: Pay attention to the questions from the consumers in your neighbourhood; not that we can stop it or block it, but there’s nothing wrong with sharing information, nothing wrong with engaging with the community and there’s nothing wrong with giving the information the community is looking for.”
This was the third recent application from Eastlink to add antennas to sites in the metro area.
The others were on Kenmount Road behind Long and McQuade, and on the roof of the former Bishops College—now Bishops Gardens senior living on Pennywell Road.
