The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s is making their fleet more eco-friendly.
The town is replacing six vehicles in its fleet with all electric vehicles as part of its goal to reduce carbon emissions.
Chief Administrative Officer with the town, Jody Murray, calls it a win-win as the new eco-friendly fleet will not only be good for the environment, but will also be lighter on the pocketbook.
The total cost of the project is just over $456,000, but 80 per cent of that cost is covered by grants from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, meaning the town is responsible to foot the rest of the bill.
Murray says the new fleet costs less than replacing a single gas vehicle, and will save them about $5,500 in fuel costs each year. She says that will also prevent 25 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
