The Autism Society of NL is providing a safe space for neurodivergent people of all ages to be themselves through the art of circus.
The physical art troupe gives people a safe space to show off a side of them they might hide from the public eye.
Recreation Coordinator with the Austim Society, Danielle Knustgraichen, says circus allows someone to hide behind a certain mask, while embracing their true selves and incorporating their special interests.
She says that can be especially helpful to those on the spectrum.
She says many people with autism experience “masking”, where they try not to stand out and hide their neurodivergence. With the physical art troupe and circus however, putting oneself out there is embraced and displayed.
The troupe has garnered interest from people of all ages, with members ranging between 4 and 86.
