A local Facebook group dedicated to discussing fish n’ chips has blown up in popularity, and has taken on an international flavour.
Geoff Meeker created the ‘Best Fish and Chips’ group in 2018, making about one post per week.
He says the page grew slowly, taking about five years to reach 1,000 members.
That all changed last year, however, when he says people in the United Kingdom started to take notice of it. Now, he says he is adding thousands of new members daily.
There are varying styles for how people like to eat their fish and chips depending on location, something which Meeker says has sparked some “intense” debate and and even “rude” comments.
He describes it as a “cultural clash.” For example, in Newfoundland many prefer dressing and gravy on their meal, while that is near “sacrilege” for some people in the UK. He says across the pond they enjoy the dish with mushy peas and curry sauce.
Meeker says the group has inspired him to want to try some of the international ways the meal is prepared.
