Parents and trans youth in this province are sharing their concerns over Alberta’s proposed gender identity and sexual orientation policy announced last week.
The new policy would prohibit children 15 and under from undergoing gender affirming procedures like surgery or hormone treatments. It would also ban youth under 15 from changing their name and pronouns in school without parental consent.
Alberta has received an uproar of backlash since the announcement. Julie Temple runs the Facebook group Parents of Trans Youth NL. She says those type of policies are rooted in misinformation.
Temple says it sends a concerning message that politicians are forming policies based on information spread online, rather than listening to gender-diverse people and health care providers.
A virtual information session will be held this evening for parents and trans individuals to ask questions to a family physician who frequently deals with gender-diverse patients.
The session is open for anyone in the province. Those interested can sign up by emailing parentsoftranskids@gmail.com.
