PC Leader Tony Wakeham is joining the calls for a greater share of the red fish quota for inshore harvesters in this province.
The red fish fishery is reopening for the first time in 30 years, with harvesters in this province looking at it as the light at the end of the tunnel given the dwindling shrimp fishery.
Hopes that it could greatly benefit this province were shot down after the federal government allocated the lion’s share of the quota to Nova Scotia’s offshore fleet, with 10 per cent dedicated to the NL inshore fishery.
Wakeham was a part of a rally in Corner Brook on Thursday, voicing his displeasure with what he calls Ottawa’s “mismanagement” of the fishery.
He’s also calling on Premier Andrew Furey to speak up on the matter.
