It looks like the eastern half of the island is in for probably the worst storm of the winter.
Storm warnings are out for the region from St. John’s to the south coast and northward to Clarenville, Gander and part of the northeast coast.
Twenty to 30 cm will fall tomorrow for most areas but expect more tomorrow night and a bit more on Thursday.
Robert Grove, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, doesn’t see much likelihood of it turning to rain. Compounding matters will be high winds for all of Wednesday and most of Thursday.
Northeasterly winds will be gusting to 80 km/h for most areas including metro with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 cm an hour.
Driving will be treacherous not only tomorrow but Thursday as well as the high winds continue to blow the snow around.
The region from Grand Falls-Windsor to the west coast, as well as Labrador, will get off lightly.
There’s also a storm surge warning for the stretch from Cape Spear to Bonavista North, especially for north-facing coastlines. The most vulnerable period will be late tomorrow night at high tide.
