The city of St. John’s says they’re ready for tomorrow’s snowstorm.
Deputy City Manager for Public Works, Lynnann Winsor says staff are at the ready, and they have a plan in place that they follow for all storms.
Because this storm is expected to be drawn out over the course of several days, Winsor explains that could mean longer wait times to get the snow cleared.
The says they’ll be in the “active phase” of plowing until the storm ends. after that phase they will begin other operations such as pushback, widening, and removal.
Province Making Preparations
Politicians are taking lots of calls about snowclearing as people wonder what they will be confronted with in the morning.
Tory MHA Loyola O’Driscoll, a proponent of expanded 24-hour snowclearing, says one of his constituents was still snowed in come 10:00 in the morning after a recent dumping.
Transportation Minister John Abbott says all the depots are in storm readiness mode. Once the storm hits, crews will be plowing as fast as they can but they can only push so much snow at any given time.
Fourteen routes will be plowed 24/7 but other routes will not be given round-the-clock attention.
Crews will be taking a break overnight but there are provisions to step in when an emergency vehicle is involved. Abbott says the advance notice of the storm allows them to better prepare.
