People in eastern Newfoundland are bundling up and hunkering down as a significant and prolonged winter storm takes aim at the region.
The bulk of the snow will fall throughout tomorrow, but the effects will be felt into Thursday before the system finally moves off on Friday.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says the snow will start overnight tonight, with the heaviest snow falling in metro by around 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m.
Neil says, in general, 30 to 50 cm is possible, with some areas—such as metro, expected to exceed that amount.
Compounding the snowfall will be strong northeasterly winds, creating blowing snow and hazardous road conditions.
While Neil doesn’t believe this storm will be to the same level as Snowmageddon four years ago, people should keep it in mind.
He says the total snowfall and windspeeds will be less than the historic storm of 2020. That said, Neil says people should keep that storm in the back of their mind as the “worst case scenario if everything… lines up.”
