Inshore fish harvesters from this province have joined harvesters in Quebec and New Brunswick to protest Ottawa’s decision on the red fish quota.
The fishery is reopening for the first time in 30 years, however the lion’s share of the quota is going to the Nova Scotia offshore fleet, which has drawn the ire of the FFAW in this province, given the dwindling shrimp fishery.
FFAW Secretary-Treasurer Jason Spingle says their members joined over 100 harvesters at the DFO office on the Gaspé Peninsula and marched half a kilometre to federal fisheries minister Diane Lebouthillier’s office.
Spingle says harvesters in Quebec and New Brunswick are in the same position as them.
He says many inshore harvesters effected are represented by Liberal MPs and ministers, so they are “flabbergasted” by the decision. He says it needs to be rectified.
