With the permanent residents of Little Bay Islands preparing to leave their island home, attention is now turning to the community’s feral cats.
Efforts are underway to try to address the 50 or so feral and semi-feral cats that could be facing a grim fate once residents leave.
After December 31st, almost all the permanent and part-time residents will be gone.
The Exploits Valley SPCA has issued a plea asking for government to step in, fearing the cats, most of which are feral, will “die a slow, horrible death” from starvation.
Carol Hall has rescued 18 kittens and two semi-feral females since June, but says about 50 cats remain. She says the cats in and around her property can be handled, but the ones elsewhere on the island can not.
Hall says they’re looking for some help from local rescue groups who can help them trap the remaining cats.
She says they want it done humanely, and would hate to see the animals trapped and euthanized.
