The federal government is providing $1.5 million to establish seven climate comfort centres on the southwest coast.
According to the federal government, the centres are places where people can find shelter, internet access, and check on family during extreme weather events.
The southwest coast knows all to well the devastating impacts os such storms. The region was hit by the catastrophic Hurricane Fiona in 2022.
The money will go towards planning, rebuilding, upgrading, and outfitting of existing comfort centres in the region.
Channel-Port aux Basques, Rose Blanche-Harbour Le Cou, Burnt Islands, Burgeo, Ramea and Harbour Authority of Magaree-Fox Roost are all receiving the money.
