The newly-elected MP for St. John’s East says his party being the only one to respond to Premier Dwight Ball with positive responses on issues facing the province shows why a different voice was needed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Jack Harris of the NDP defeated Liberal incumbent, Nick Whalen last night to take the seat back, while the Liberals held onto the other six.
Harris says he campaigned on needing an independent voice. He says we needed more than just Liberal MPs in the province, and he believes the NDP being the only party to truly respond to the Premier underscores that.
When it comes to electoral reform, Harris says the NDP will be continuing that fight. He says with a minority government they actually have to work with other parties.
Harris says people are disgusted with the election campaign because it was all about pushing the other guy in hopes of scaring people into not voting for what they really wanted. He says people deserve better, and democracy has to improve – something they will be fighting for.
