The parents of a deaf child who has encountered issues in the province’s educational system say they’re delighted with the Child and Youth Advocate’s efforts to address the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children in the province.
Kim and Todd Churchill of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s recently launched a Human Rights complaint against the English School District because they say their son Carter cannot get an education in his first language.
Carter uses American Sign Language, and they want him to be instructed by a teacher who also uses ASL.
Child and Youth Advocate, Jackie Lake Kavanagh is looking to hear from other deaf or hard of hearing students and their families who have encountered problems in the educational system and elsewhere.
Kim Churchill is applauding the effort. She’s hoping the parents and educators who have reached out to them in confidence will take this added step.
