The provincial government will soon release a decision on World Energy GH2’s proposed hydrogen and wind development on the Port au Port Peninsula. The environment minister will release his decision on the Environmental Impact Statement. He has the option of accepting it, rejecting it, or extending the deadline to do either.
The company plans to build an extensive network of wind turbines to provide energy for an ammonia plant to create hydrogen for export to Germany.
Robert Loder of Point Leamington in central Newfoundland is also awaiting the update. He’s the co-administrator of the Proposed Turbines and Ammonia Plant in Exploits Facebook page.
The Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) is proposing a hydrogen production development in central Newfoundland powered by wind energy.
Loder told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the benefits to Newfoundland and Labrador would be few. He believes residents are being “green washed” into supporting the proposed projects.
“The only thing Newfoundlanders are getting in exchange for companies which are profiting off our resources,” says Loder, “is a promise of jobs, which are going to be short-term jobs for the construction.”
He says the projects will need ongoing taxpayer subsidies as they are destined to fail, because the prices can’t compete on the world market.”
