Both the RCMP and RNC are investigating a crime spree that ranged from the capital city to Clarenville and are turning to the public to help identify four suspects believed involved.
It all started when RNC notified the RCMP of a gas and dash from Barbour’s Irving just outside St. John’s around 11:00 Monday morning. The vehicle involved was a blue Volkswagen Jetta, which had been reported stolen from Seaborn Street sometime between Thursday, April 25 and Saturday. April 27.
The same car is also believed to have been involved during a theft from a sporting goods store in Churchill Square on Friday, April 26.
RCMP located the vehicle in question driving west on the Trans Canada but when they tried to pull it over, it sped away.
Around 1:00 that afternoon Clarenville RCMP were called after two men entered Coastal Outdoors and removed a quantity of clothing. They fled in the stolen Volkswagen. A few hours later at 3:30, RCMP were contacted about suspicious activity near Whitbourne, where a car matching the description of the stolen Volkswagen was seen parked on the shoulder of the road with a flat tire. Four people—two men and two women—believed to be in their 20s were seen walking away carrying full garbage bags.
Police from Whitbourne, Bay Roberts and Holyrood, as well as Police Dog Services, seized the stolen car and the police dog was able to follow the track to an area further down the highway where police believe the suspects were picked up by another vehicle.
Police have released surveillance images of two of the suspects and are asking the public for help in identifying them. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or RNC.
