No enforcement action is expected following a massive chicken mortality event at a broiler farm on Roaches Line.
The incident occurred at B.I.A. Farms yesterday, October 24, and was reported to the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources today.
The incident—involving a computer malfunction controlling the farm’s ventilation system—affected about 19,000 of the 160,000 broiler chickens at the site.
The province’s Chief Veterinarian Officer confirmed the deaths were not due to an infectious disease and there is no human health or food safety risk.
The department says the company did not violate any compliance requirements associated with the Animal Health and Protection Act.
Government says B.I.A. Farms is following established protocols to compost the affected chicken at a designated land fill site.
