An Australian-based company is working on resurrecting the Kami mine in the Labrador Trough with the long-awaited project now entering the environmental assessment process.

Kami was originally touted for its potential as a major economic driver in Labador West—the first major mining project in the region in decades—but it failed to get off the ground despite receiving federal government approval a decade ago. Champion Iron Mines acquired Kami back in 2020 after the previous majority holder, Alderon, went into receivership.

Kami is about seven kilometres southwest of Wabush. The mine is expected to produce approximately 8.6 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually over the life of it—an estimated 26 years.

Champion says the proposed project will include an open pit mine, processing plant, and all the necessary infrastructure including access roads, a railway corridor, and workforce accommodations.

The deadline for public comment is June 7 with the minister’s decision expected by June 17.
