Residents in the district of Baie Verte-Green Bay will cast their ballots in what has been an eventful few weeks on the campaign trail.
Polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with three candidates in the running—Lin Paddock for the PCs, Owen Burt representing the Liberals, and Riley Harnett for the New Democrats.
Two of the candidates have made headlines over the past week. Paddock came under fire after a comment he made during a debate was perceived by some as having a racial overtone. He has since issued an apology, which was accepted by PC Leader Tony Wakeham.
Questions were also raised about Burt’s affiliation with the federal Conservative Party. The Liberal candidate says he has been open about his distaste for the current federal government, but is a supporter of the provincial party. Premier Andrew Furey stands behind his candidate, saying he has zero concerns about Burt’s support for the federal Tories.
