Memorial University’s Students Union says its members were “horrified” following a meeting with MUN administration on their concerns regarding the ongoing war in the Middle East, but the university says any decisions it makes will be done following careful consideration.
Students involved in a tent encampment on the Memorial campus demanded that MUN administration disclose all university investments, and divest from weapons manufacturers and companies with ties to Israel.
Students were invited to a meeting with administration on May 24, and were hoping for action, but say they were disappointed with the outcome.
Memorial says it understands that the students are deeply concerned about the people of Palestine, and that they were disappointed with the outcome of the meeting, but any decision the university makes must allow time and space for responsible decision making and that conflicting views be respectfully shared and considered.
Memorial says it is currently having conversations internally about its approach to investments, particularly in relation to environmental, social, governance, and other considerations.
In the meantime, MUN says it affirms the rights of students to peacefully protest and to do so without fear of reprisal.
