The Nunatsiavut Government is defending its commercial fisheries allocations in response to what it calls misinformation surrounding the fish quotas.
Some Inuit harvesters planned protests today against the Nunatsiavut Government in a dispute over allocations.
Protesters say seven harvesters were denied a share of the northern shrimp quota in favour of an Inuit designate with a factory freezer trawler.
The Nunatsiavut Government says beneficiary vessel owners on the north coast of Labrador are given priority while beneficiary vessel owners outside of the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area receive less priority.
Nunatsiavut says all designates were informed of the multi-year designation policy in 2021, and all vessels in 2024 comply with the Nunatsiavut Government’s licensing requirements.
