Many students are celebrating the end of another school year, but large out-of-control gatherings have become a real concern for parents and police.
Just last week, two teenagers were arrested after another young person was injured in a random attack during an unauthorized field party in Torbay.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says officers have responded to reports of assaults and offences involving drugs and weapons at these type of events numerous times over the past few weeks.
He says what’s meant to be a night of fun for graduating teens can easily turn tragic, something which is fueled by the presence of social media.
Cadigan says posts made on apps like Snapchat and Instagram allow anyone on the platform to see the happenings at these parties and ultimately invites someone with ill-intent to show up and cause trouble.
He urges parents and guardians to take extra measures to ensure their child’s safety at such events.
“Know where your teens are, especially as we celebrate graduation time,” he says. Cadigan encourages regular check-ins throughout the night to make sure teens feel safe, and to call for help should things get out of hand.
