Almost one year out from the catastrophic implosion of the Titan sub, an American billionaire is planning to take another deep dive to the Titanic wreck.
The information was first reported this week by the Wall Street Journal.
Ohio real estate billionaire Larry Connor has teamed up with Patrick Lahey, co-founder of Triton Submarines, for the endeavor.
They plan on making the dive in a $20-million vessel known as the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, once it has been fully certified.
According to reports, the 4000 in the name refers to the depths, in meters, at which the sub can safely dive. The Titanic itself is about 3,800 meters below the surface of the ocean.
Neither Connor nor Lahey have given a timeframe for their expedition.
Connor told the Wall Street Journal that he wants to make the dive to show the world that while the ocean is “extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way.”
The world watched in hope, and then horror, as an intensive search and rescue operation was carried out last June for the Titan submersible, owned by OceanGate, which did not return from an expedition to the famous shipwreck.
It was later discovered that the Titan imploded during its descent, killing all five people on board.
