The province has increased the yearly capacity for the Trail of the Caribou Pilgrimage Student Ambassador Program.
Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement in the House of Assembly earlier this week, just days removed from a trip to France to repatriate the remains of an unknown soldier.
The pilgrimage is done yearly, with students taking in remembrance ceremonies at the five caribou monuments in Northern France and Belgium, including the July 1st ceremony at Beaumont-Hamel.
Until now, just over 30 students could take part. Beginning next year, government is increasing that number to 100.
Furey says being in Beaumont-Hamel last week was incredibly moving, and gave inspiration to expand the program.
He says the sacrifices that were made are social crucial to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, that he felt it was important to further protect them. Given the fact that it is the 100th anniversary of the National War Memorial, he felt it was appropriate to expand the program.
