The provincial government has created a new benefit to help persons with disabilities.
Government is putting up $26-million to get the program going.
Beginning in July 2025, people who qualify for the federal disability tax credit, who are between the ages of 18 and 64, and who make less than $29,402 per year will be eligible to receive $400 per month.
Those who make more than that amount can qualify for some money as well, based on a sliding scale up to a yearly income of $42,400.
Starting January 1st, government is also beginning a Registered Disability Savings Program contribution of $100 per month, or $1,200 yearly, up to age 49.
Minister of Children, Seniors, and Social Development, Paul Pike says the new program is in addition to other supports currently in place.
For example, he says if a person with a disability is also receiving income supports they will still be eligible for the full $400 monthly benefit.
Pike says if that same person enters the workforce they will still be eligible for the monthly benefit, subject to the sliding income scale.
