The FFAW says a minority government gives the province’s fishing industry an opportunity to see movement on key issues impacting inshore harvesters and plant workers.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says the election of a minority government should send a clear message to elected officials that Canadians want to see more co-operation amongst the parties.
He says they will work with both Liberal and NDP members for the province and hold them to the commitments made throughout the campaign.
Both parties made strong commitments to improve enforcement of owner-operator and fleet separation policies, to continue supporting the allocation of the first 115,000 metric tonnes of northern cod to inshore harvesters, take immediate action to address rising seal populations, reform Employment Insurance and more.
Sullivan says there is much work left to be done when it comes to fair quota allocations for NL harvesters.
He says they are optimistic that this progressive, minority government will share this goal and swiftly work to implement election commitments that will a secure a future for thousands who rely on the fishery.
