The sexual assault trial for a St. John’s fire captain was delayed when the case was called in provincial court yesterday.
Fifty-two-year-old Ron Pomeroy was charged in December with sexual assault and sexual exploitation involving a teenage girl.
The offences are alleged to have occurred between February and May of last year. It’s also alleged that Pomeroy committed the acts while in a position of trust or authority.
The trial was set to start yesterday but the Crown said they needed more time to review evidence from police which was only received two weeks ago, after the original trial dates were set.
As a result, all sides agreed to return on July 29 to deal with pre-trial applications and set new trial dates.
Pomeroy was a captain with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department when the charges were laid in December but his current employment status is unclear.
The former firefighter of the year is also a past board member with the executive of the union, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1075.
In 2019 he received the Governor General’s Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal.
