A number of police officers were recognized for their dedication to removing impaired drivers from the province’s roadways at a recent ceremony in St. John’s.
The annual Nick Coates Awards took place Friday at RNC Headquarters in St. John’s.
Officers who have taken a minimum of 12 impaired drivers off the roads during the previous year receive the gold award. Cops who have taken a minimum of eight drunk drivers off the roads receive the silver award.
This year, MADD Canada inducted nine RCMP officers and five RNC into the 2023 Nick Coates Impaired Driving Team.

This year’s gold award recipients are:
- Corporal Dennis Thornhill (Traffic Services Central)
- Constable Mackenzie McCoy (Harbour Grace)
- Constable Adam Graham (Nain)
- Constable Caleb Pellerin (Traffic Services West)
- Constable Janet Reddy (Holyrood)
- Constable Bradley Layman (Burin Peninsula)
This year’s silver award recipients are:
- Constable Jarrett Thorne (Traffic Services Central)
- Constable Jean-Francois Gagnon (Corner Brook)
- Constable David Ballard (Bay St. George)
RNC
This year’s gold award recipients are:
- Cst. Geoffrey Heffernan – 22 arrests, Mount Pearl Detachment.
- Cst. Cody Langmead – 21 arrests, RNC Provincial Headquarters, St. John’s.
This year’s silver award recipients are:
- Cst. Michael Burton –Eight arrests, RNC Provincial Headquarters, St. John’s.
- Cst. Shane McClafferty – Eight arrests, Mount Pearl Detachment.
- Cst. Kyle Morrissey – Eight arrests, Mount Pearl Detachment.
