Those who regularly use Pitts Memorial Drive in the capital city to enter and leave the downtown will have to find a new route by this weekend.
Work will begin on the CN Viaduct this Friday, June 21 and continue until July 21.
That means Pitts Memorial will be temporarily closed during that time between the Kilbride exit and downtown St. John’s.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says the closure is necessary for safety reasons to carry out extensive concrete repair work on both the eastbound and westbound lanes.
The department says closing the area for a one-month period will allow the work to be completed without interruption, reduce the period of temporary bridge closures, and remove the need for load restrictions for trucks.
During the closure alternate routes for tractor trailers going eastbound to enter the downtown will include New Gower Street, Duckworth Street and Cavendish Square.
Alternate routes for westbound traffic include Kings Bridge Road to Torbay Road to Outer Ring Road and Macdonald Drive at Torbay Road to access Columbus Drive.
