The US Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation says the investigation into the loss of the Titan submersible one year ago will take longer than initially expected.
The MBI issued an update on its investigation on Friday.
OceanGate’s Titan submersible, with five people on board, imploded while descending to the wreck of the Titanic on June 18, 2023.
St. John’s served both as the launching point for OceanGate’s ill-fated subsea expedition and as the base of an international search and recovery effort and media coverage following the submersible’s loss.
MBI Chair Jason Neubauer says they are working closely with domestic and international partners to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident.
Adding to delays is the need to contract two salvage missions to “secure vital evidence and the extensive forensic testing required.”
The MBI says it intends to hold a public hearing session by the end of the year. Specific details will be announced at least two months prior to the hearings.
