The MUN Students’ Union says university administration has agreed to several concessions following several weeks of protests on campus regarding the ongoing military action between Israel and Hamas.
The student-led pro-Palestinian protests saw a tent encampment erected outside MUN’s Arts and Admin Building in St. John’s, and last week some of the protesters made their way inside.
MUNSU says the concessions include public disclosure of direct investments and names of pooled accounts, working with students to create a joint statement on Palestine, to facilitate a meeting between students and the Board of Regents on the topic of divestment—scheduled for today, and support for Palestinian students including bursaries and waiving of fees.
The union’s director of external affairs, Nick Keough, says they still haven’t reached an agreement with MUN but negotiations are ongoing.
Keough explains that he has heard from many students who feel “isolated” and “ignored” by the university, and seeing them “take a stand” will make a difference to them.
