A veterinarian is sharing some tips for dog owners during this hot spell on how to cool down their dogs.
Dogs don’t take heatwaves well. Dr. Maggie Brown-Bury recommends keeping them in the shade with unlimited access to water.
She suggests going for walks during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening, as hot asphalt and concrete can cause issues with the pads on their feet.
Brown-Bury explains that dogs have different cooling system than humans. Certain breeds, such as flat-faced ones, struggle to cool down more so than other types of dogs.
She says putting dogs in cold water could sometimes do more harm than good as it can lead to skin infections if they don’t dry out well.
