The City of Mount Pearl hopes their new community centre will be open before the end of 2025.
The city officially broke ground on the new facility yesterday, with Mayor Dave Aker flicking the first clumps of soil from the ground with a shovel.
It will be located near the Team Gushue complex on Arena road.
The community centre will replace Park Place, and Mayor Dave Aker says it will be a space for things such as weddings, dance recitals, and other functions, and will also feature an outdoor splash pad in the summer and ice surface in the winter.
Aker says it will be a revenue generator for the city and he believes there will be good uptake from community groups. He says it will also help council realize their goal of having the Reid Centre as a full time recreational area.
