A former acupuncturist from China, well known for thumbing her nose at the law, did it again this morning, and got kicked out of court for it.
Judge Jacqueline Brazil warned Xiao Hong Liu four times to stop interrupting and talking over her, but she kept going.
That forced Brazil to ask Sheriff’s Officers to remove her from the courtroom and set her up in a separate room, with a video link, where she could hear but not be heard.
Liu, who has been jailed at the city lockup for a week, was back before the courts this morning facing four charges of trespassing on MUN property, and five of refusing to follow court orders.
It follows a pattern of similar contempt for the law and the courts, starting with her continuing to practice acupuncture in the city despite being suspended since 2020. That began with complaints about the cleanliness of her office, and subsequent refusals to adhere to any of the rulings made by the regulator or the courts.
Brazil, meanwhile, repeatedly expressed concerns this morning with Lui being held at the lockup for what’s now been a week, as well as her mental fitness.
The judge ordered a psychiatric assessment, and for the matter to be called as soon as possible in bail court, to expedite Lui’s release pending her next court date.
