The Roman Catholic Church has been ordered to pay a series of settlements totalling $104 million to victims of abuse in this province.
The series of settlements will be paid out to nearly 300 people who reported sexual and physical abuse at the Mount Cashel orphanage, dating back to the 1940s to the early 1960s.
The issue, according to lawyer Bob Buckingham, is that the Archdiocese of St. John’s has only raised about $45 million from property sales and government negotiations.
Buckingham says he’s working closely with other lawyers to explore options to bring in the remaining contributions.
It’s hoped that the first series of payments will be issued in the fall.
